Race day in Ireland is one of my absolute favourite fashion moments of the year. It is that rare combination of elegance, fun, and a chance to step outside your usual style comfort zone. But with so many dress codes, hat choices, and outfit decisions to be made, it can also feel a little overwhelming.
If you have ever stood in front of your wardrobe the night before a big race day wondering What on earth am I going to wear?, I promise you are not alone! Let’s break it down so you can feel stylish, comfortable, and completely confident when you step out onto the racecourse.
One thing I noticed about Race Days in Ireland, is it is an incredible community. If you want a day that celebrates women celebrating women, there is nothing like it.
The Secret to Nailing Race Day Style
Irish race days are known for their mix of glamour and tradition, and while there is no one-size-fits-all formula, the best looks always start with a great fit and a silhouette that suits you.
When you wear something that works with your body shape, you feel the difference—it sits better, moves better, and gives you that effortless confidence.
Here’s some of my go-to tips:
- Have Fun with Colour:Race day is the perfect excuse to embrace colour in a way you might not usually. Bold block prints or beautiful florals can instantly elevate your look and add personality to your outfit. If you tend to stick to neutrals, try incorporating colour through accessories—statement heels, a standout fascinator, or even a bright clutch can bring an outfit to life.
- The One Day You Can Wear White: Unlike weddings, where white is strictly off-limits, race day is one of the few occasions where it is completely fair game. A crisp white dress or tailored white co-ord is effortlessly chic and gives off a timeless, polished feel. If you love the idea but worry about practicality (because let’s be honest, red wine and white fabric are not friends), opt for cream or soft neutral tones that still achieve that elegant look while being slightly more forgiving.
- Classic Colour Palettes for a Chic, Polished Look: If you want to lean into the tradition and formality of race day, a refined, monochromatic look is always a winner. Think all-white, cream, dove grey, or soft pastels—elegant, expensive-looking, and never overdone. This is a styling trick often seen on royals like Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, and it works beautifully. If you love a more statement look, black-and-white combinations or soft tonal layering can create the same high-end effect.
- Finding the Perfect Silhouette: Fit-and-flare midi dresses are always a safe and stylish choice. They offer a flattering shape while keeping your look sophisticated and race-day appropriate. To ensure you meet any dress codes, avoid strapless or halter-neck styles and opt for short sleeves or wider straps instead. If your dress has a print, pull one or two colours from the pattern for your accessories—this creates a cohesive, well-thought-out look.
- Jumpsuits: The Effortless Alternative to Dresses : If dresses are not your thing, a jumpsuit is a stylish and easy alternative. Universally flattering, they work beautifully for race days with minimal effort. For a chic, polished look, go for a fitted bodice and wide-leg trousers in light, summer-ready hues. The wide leg balances a fuller bust, flatters a pear-shaped body, and adds an instant touch of elegance. Bonus points for pockets!
Key Race Days to Keep on Your Radar
If you love an excuse to dress up (and who doesn’t?), here are some of the biggest race day events in Ireland:
- Fairyhouse Easter Festival – Ladies Day → Saturday, 19th April 2025
- Punchestown Festival – Ladies Day → Friday, 2nd May 2025
- Down Royal Summer Festival – Ladies Day → Saturday, 21st June 2025
- Irish Derby Festival – Ladies Day → Saturday, 28th June 2025
- Galway Races Summer Festival – Ladies Day → Thursday, 31st July 2025
- Killarney August Racing Festival – Ladies Day → Thursday, 21st August 2025
- Listowel Harvest Festival – Ladies Day → Friday, 19th September 2025
- Cork Racecourse Mallow – Ladies Day → Sunday, 5th October 2025
- Navan Racecourse Winter Ladies Day → Sunday, 23rd November 2025
- Leopardstown Christmas Festival – Ladies Day → Saturday, 27th December 2025
Each race day has its own vibe, so I always recommend dressing for the occasion. What works for the Galway Races might not feel quite right for the Irish Derby, and that is where a little planning goes a long way.

The Finishing Touch: Millinery & Accessories
Nothing elevates a race day outfit quite like a beautiful hat or fascinator. If you have never worn one before, trust me—once you do, you will wonder why you waited so long!
If you aren't usually a hat person, opt for something that you will feel the most comfortable in and keep it simple. You don't have to wear a formal "races" hat, headband, bows or clips can be a fantastic modern option.
Some of my absolute favourites for stunning, Irish-made millinery are:
🎀 Millinery by Mairead – Classic and feminine with a modern twist.
🎀 Fiona Rafter Millinery – Unique and statement-making, perfect if you love a bold look.
When it comes to accessories, less is often more. Here is what I always recommend:
- A structured clutch that fits the essentials but still looks sleek.
- Comfortable heels—because a full day at the races can be long, and you will thank yourself later.
- Jewellery that complements rather than competes with your outfit.
- Think about gloves and shawls/wraps- do a stunning pair of gloves work with your overall style? Or would a fur stole, with a vintage broach compliment your overall look?

Final Race Day Tips
Before I go, here are a few last-minute reminders to make sure you feel your best:
✅ Check the weather – Race days in Ireland can be unpredictable! A lightweight coat or wrap can save the day.
✅ Break in your shoes – If you are wearing new heels, wear them around the house for a few days first.
✅ Confidence is key – The most stylish women at the races are the ones who feel good in what they are wearing.
Race day is about feeling your best so no matter what you wear, the most important thing is that you feel good in it - Enjoy yourself, celebrate your personal style, and have fun!
